Caban
Caban is a piece of public art by the artist Joep Van Lieshout. The sculpture, located in the Pontio landscape is a modern day interpretation of the quarrymen’s caban, and a meeting place for formal and informal performances: a place to have fun!
This is a place for everyone – students, residents, children and visitors alike. As artist Bedwyr Williams put it: “Pontio’s Caban will be something that celebrates the way the workers transformed what was basically a hut into myriad different uses, to perform, to argue, to discuss and to dream.”
In 1995 Joep Van Lieshout founded Atelier Van Lieshout, a studio which has attained international recognition for objects that balance on the boundary between art, architecture and design. These works of art are practical, uncomplicated and substantial. This will be Joep’s first UK public art commission.
